redesigning the website for "The Exterminators" on A&E!

So recently I had the awesome opportunity of redesigning the website for Vexcon Inc., an Extermination company in Shreveport, LA. The name Vexcon may sound familiar because they were featured on "Dirty Jobs" on Discovery Channel and also have their own show on A&E Channel called "The Exterminators" which airs Wednesdays at 10:30p.m. I happened to catch "The Exterminators" on TV for the first time while flipping through channels on my TV. Curious about the show, I Google'd to find their page on the A&E website and then to see if they had a website of their own. After looking at their website, I felt like I could design them something that could look something like their page on the A&E website or maybe even better. After a few emails and phone calls with Billy from Vexcon, I had the job of giving Vexcon a new look on the web! I was super stoked as this is my first time working for someone who was on TV!

Coming up with a look for the website was long and stressful... I needed to design something that had a "dirty, extermination, grungy" type look/feel with the "sleek "web 2.0-ish" look rolled into one. While I was watching the Vexcon Dirty Jobs clip on youtube.. the first few seconds of the video (with the "Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe" title and the "splat" marks) gave me the idea of the muddy, splatter look which you see on the new site. My personal taste in websites is the modern, web 2.0-ish, or "glossy" look (i love the apple.com website!) so I wanted to integrate my personal tastes into the website as well. It's always hard to design a website because you have to make something with many different personalities and tastes in mind.

The next step was to make sure the website had a good bit of informative and helpful info on pest control, information about the company, and to put the spotlight on their TV exposure. So I gave the website a "Pest Control" section which contained useful info on signs of pest problems and ways to control these pests. I made sure, ofcourse, the website had an "About" section that was informative about the company and what they did as well as a "Crew" section so people could get to know the Vexcon Crew. And to make sure Vexcon was put in the spotlight, the website contains info about the show, links to "The Exterminators" page on the A&E website, and a "Videos" section where people can watch clips of the Vexcon crew at work, on the show, and even be able to watch full episodes of the show.. just incase people missed it on TV!

The new website went live on March 9th, 2009 and was announced on the A&E website! Since going up, the website has had a few additions and updates and people can expect to see other updates and changes to the site as I am now the Official Vexcon "Webguy"! I was honored when I was asked by Billy to stay aboard as their webguy. It has been a pleasure talking with Billy and Donnie of the Vexcon crew over the past few weeks and it's an even bigger pleasure to be a part of the Vexcon family and crew! Below are pictures of the autographed pictures and Vexcon Shirt Donnie was sweet enough to mail me (Thanks guys!)

things all designers should know, do, avoid, etc..

1. If you honestly, truthfully, love something you have designed, you're arrogant. Get over yourself.

2. If you're driving for more than five minutes you should have passed enough signs, billboards, adverts, etc. for you to have named three typefaces used on them. read more

.simp is back online!

So if you don't know already, .simp (simple instant messenger program) is a project of mine that I released back in April of 2008. If you're not already using .simp, download it now! http://simp.mwmaster.com. Anyway, .simp is powered by Openfire (an open source IM server platform) and I ...read more..
